DOCUMENTARY INTERVIEW LIST (partial)

MORRIE TURNER COLLECTION

A collection of cartoon cells, letters, books, calendars, and photographs which document the growth of Morrie Turner as a youth in Oakland who later joined the U.S. Army and became a cartoonist. Contains letters from his publisher, photographs of Morrie growing up, members of his family and friends. Also contains images of Turner with other cartoonist colleagues and local celebrities.

2. Mort Walker
Mort Walker, the creator of “Beetle Bailey” and co-creator of “Hi and Lois,” will go down in history as one of the great legends of comics. Inspired by the newspaper comics of his childhood, most notably “Moon Mullins” by Frank Willard, Mort began cartooning at a very young age -- he published his first comic at eleven years old, and he was publishing professionally on a regular basis by the age of 14. Animator, filmmaker, and cartoon historian. He has spent a life time devoted to research, and is recognized as a foremost expert on Max Fleischer and The Fleischer Studios. His book, The Art and Inventions of Max Fleischer: American Animation Pioneer will be published in October by McFarland Publishing.

6. Ron Gouglart
In the early 1970s, Goulart wrote several scripts for Marvel Comics, mostly adaptations of classic science fiction stories. Later in the decade, he collaborated with artist Gil Kane on the Star Hawks newspaper strip. In the early 1990s, he scripted Marvel's TekWar comics series.
 
7. Darrin Bell
A Pulitzer Prize-winning American editorial cartoonist and comic strip creator known for the syndicated comic strips Candorville and Rudy Park. He is a syndicated editorial cartoonist with King Features. His editorial cartoons were formally syndicated by The Washington Post Writers Group. Bell is the first African-American to have two comic strips syndicated nationally.[citation needed] He is also a storyboard artist. 8. Ray Billingsly
African American cartoonist, the creator of the comic strip Curtis, which is distributed by King Features Syndicate and printed in more than 250 newspapers nationwide.
 
9. Tim Jackson***
A syndicated editorial cartoonist whose work has appeared in the Chicago Defender, Chicago Tribune, Cincinnati Herald, and many other newspapers, Jackson recently became a cartoon historian with the publication of his book Pioneering Cartoonists of Color.

11. Aaron McGruder
Aaron Vincent McGruder is an American writer, lecturer, producer, screenwriter and cartoonist best known for writing and drawing The Boondocks, a Universal Press Syndicate comic strip and its animated TV series adaptation for which he was the creator, executive producer, and head writer.
 
12. Brian Walker
He has a diverse background in professional cartooning and cartoon scholarship. He is a founder and former director of the International Museum of Cartoon Art, where he worked from 1974 to 1992. He taught cartoon history at the School of Visual Arts from 1995 to 1996. He has served as the curator on 65 cartoon exhibitions, including two recent retrospectives.

13. Elizabeth Campbell
Daughter of E. Simms Campbell's Cuties (1968) was syndicated by King Features to more than 145 newspapers. Of enduring cultural and historical interest is the witty, cartoon-filled map Campbell drew in 1932 – "A Night-Club Map of 1930s Harlem" – identifying the attractions of Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance, and adding his personal notes.

16. John Shearer
Son of Ted Shearer (1919-1992) was an African American illustrator, cartoonist and painter best known for his work on the comic strip Quincy. He designed the character Billy Jo Jive on Sesame Street.

As an award-winning photojournalist for LOOK and LIFE magazines, John Shearer documented some of the most critical events of the 1960s and ’70s, including the funerals of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. Shearer was hired by LOOK at age 17 to photograph Civil Rights marches in the American South and went on to follow in the footsteps of his childhood idol, Gordon Parks, by working as a photographer at LIFE magazine.

Kyle John Baker is an American cartoonist, comic book writer-artist, and animator known for his graphic novels and for a 2000s revival of the series Plastic Man. Baker has won numerous Eisner Awards and Harvey Awards for his work in the comics field.

Dwayne Glenn McDuffie was an American writer of comic books and television, known for producing and writing the animated series Static Shock, Justice League Unlimited. The Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics is given to an American Comic Book that is committed to diversity and inclusion. It is named in honor of Dwayne McDuffie, a creator known for his work writing, editing, and producing comics and animation.

Andrew Farago is the curator of San Francisco's Cartoon Art Museum. Trina uses Morrie Turner’s life story as inspirational tool Thompson is a judge for the Alameda County Superior Court in California. She was elected to the bench in November 2002. She holds the distinction of being the first African American woman to be elected to the Alameda County Superior Court.
